Lucky Cupids-recenzija v reviji Rocking & Stomping

The Lucky Cupids from Slovenia

[20 august 2002]

What would you expect if I said: "Red hot rockabilly from Slovenia"?
You probably would ask: "What is Slovenia?"
Slovenia is a small European country between Austria and Italy. If you are curious, just look it up in your favorite encyclopedia on CD-Rom.

I don't know much about the favorite national music in Slovenia, but it could hardly be Rockabilly. Yet there is at least one band that plays the real red hot, authentic fifties and sixties rockabilly and rock & roll.

The band is called THE LUCKY CUPIDS and they have one CD out, called "Pride dan".
The CD is on Nika Records and has also been released in England, on the Nervous label.

The following tracks are on the CD:

1. Pride dan; 2. Ker ti ne veš; 3. Kakšna je ta zenska; 4. Moja sestra nebi; 5. Nina; 6. U mislik si mi ti; 7. Ne morem brez nje; 8. Zacaran sem; 9. Men je cist useen; 10. Tainted love; 11. Show business je O.K.; 12. Mexicali baby.

The Lucky Cupids are:
Andrej Rudolf - vocals and rhythm guitar (a mix of Elvis and Jimmy Dean)
Matevz Carnelutti - solo guitar (the new Scotty Moore)
Ales Kolar - double slap bass (sympatico)
Grega Zamljen Usenik - drums (crazy)

The group was established in 1994 and plays mainly the crazy 50's rockabilly music, a mix between swing, surf, rhythm and blues, a little country and western style.
Their first CD PRIDE DAN has been released in 1999 and is the first and only rockabilly project in Slovenia. Almost all the songs are in Slovene, but don't let that put you off, because all tracks sound really great!

I just got their new promo CD with songs from Pride dan, new songs, live recordings, demo's and home recordings.
There are 29 tracks on the promo and I will only mention the English songs, although the quality of the other songs is by no means less.

Help me make it through the night; Baby let's play house; Desperado love; One cup of coffee; Brand new Cadillac; Shakin' all over; Lonely blue boy; Gunnin' for the dog; Rock-a-billy boogie; Baby what you want me to do; Stray cat strut; Johnny b. good; Just a little bit; Rock this town; Doin' time for bein' young; Love me; That'll be the day; Young and beautiful; Something I said.

The first thing that strikes me when listening to the CD, is that the many familiar songs do not sound like cover versions. They sound new and original. The band did not copy the songs note by note, but added their own musical ideas.
The instrumental side of the tracks is very strong, fresh and professional.
Vocalist Andrej Rudolf sounds a lot like Vince Taylor. Other influences are The Johnny Burnette Trio, Gene Vincent and The Stray Cats.

I do not know if there are already songs scheduled for release on a new CD, but I hope so.
The Lucky Cupids deserve more international recognition.

LUCKY CUPIDS
RED HOT ROCKABILLY/PRIDE DAN + BONUS CDrs

35 songs - over 1 hour of red hot rockabilly from Slovenia. Great production, great vocal, good choice of covers and beautiful solo guitar I only heard by Stray Cats. You know what I mean. It's nice, a bit clear and warm guitar sound. These guys are great musicians and they know how to create the 50s sphere. Maybe "Red Hot Rockabilly" isn't anything new - it's mostly covers, but you can really enjoy it even if you are not big rockabilly fan. You get great versions of "Brand New Cadillac", "Shakin' All Over", "Johnny Be Good", great great version of "Baby Please Don't Go"... There are also lot of songs which I don't know. I love when they sing in Slovenian, sounds even better than in English. My faves are rockabilly Beatles covers, all in Slovenian - real killers. I strongly recommend this CD to everybody - not only rockabilly lovers.

"Pride Dan" is mostly in Slovenian and almost cover free (at least I recognize only few songs, but please forgive my poor knowledge of rockabilly music). Honestly it's even better than really great "Red Hot Rockabilly". Lucky Cupids are really great songwriters. Great guitar sound, specially in "Kaksna je ta zenska?". I must say that "Tainted Love" is really great killer version of early 80s synth pop. I also love "Zacaran Sem", nice rockabilly ballad with beautiful guitar - with Las Vegas strip bar feeling.
Bonus is acoustic rockabilly session - nice for after hours with bottle of vine.

Lucky Cupids-članek v fanzinu BoppinAround-NL

Here is the complete translation of article (you'll get a scan of the article later on, I had planned to enclose it now, but my second old computer to which the scanner is connected/attached doens't work properly, so I have to install the scanner software on my other newer computer and then I'm able to make scans, so you'll have to wait one or a few days, please):

"A nice sounding name: The Lucky Cupids. Probably a little bit decent, but the first step to a rockabilly scene in Slovenia has taken with this band !
It seems that Lucky Cupids is the onliest band that Slovenia is rich of. They are with four of them: Andrej Rudolf (singer/rhythm guitar), Matevz Carnelutti (lead guitar), Ales Kolar (standup bass), Grega Zamljen Usenik (drums).
After their foundation (already in 1994) they released their first CD just in 1999. This album "pride dan" is almost completely in the Slovenian language, but also released by British Nervous. The band sent us a demo which consisted as well as Slovenian songs (tracks, numbers, as we used to say here) as well as songs from their first demo "red hot rockabilly". These are English songs. The target is probably to get known in the rest of Europe (and in this case the Benelux (= Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg)). They already have been booked for the Rockabilly Rave festival in England, march 2003.

We start with the Slovenian tracks that wear titles such like Ne Verjamem In Se Slepim, Kaksna Je Ta Senska and more not understandable songs for us.
We will for easy purpose suppose that these also deal with beautiful women, however I recognize some wellknown ones.
Very recognizable however is Moj Don....that's Blue Moon....excellent done ! The melody of their own songs are very 'western' flavoured and with that I don't mean western swing, but music whereby you can imagine western movies. Yeh, yeh, with Slovenian cowboys of course ! Anyway, we hear carefull played rockabilly, in a fabulous and professional way !
What's most recognizable are the nice in our ear lying (literally translated as we used to say it hear) guitarlicks and the great rhythmic slapping bass sounds.
After hearing these songs it's a little bit disappointing that the English songs mostlly are covers from very wellknown 'modern' rockabilly songs, like Tainted Love (Soft Cell (1981, popgroup), uh (I mean), Dave Philips) and Stray Cat Strut and a whole mountain original 50's covers from Baby Let's Play House and One Cup Of Coffee to Brand New Cadillac and Johnny B. Goode. But if we purily look to the way they are played all these versions can be there ! (literally translated, meaning good versions), part by part. The sound of some tracks is less, but it seems that these are live recordings and thus (so) the judgement is more difficult.
What I mostly appreciate is that the Buddy Holly songs Not fade Away, Oh Boy, Love Me and That'll Be The Day sound very good. And that live ! Finally it's obvious that you nearly can't hear an accent.
The Lucky Cupids not only is the best Slovenian rockabilly band (which is very clear if you are the onliest one) but it is not for nothing that they have attacked Europe, because these guys really have quality. Guys, take English lessons and do compose some English songs. Yes, I know I have easy talking, I know......."

Personal note: you have to know that especially countries like The Netherlands, Belgium, Danmark, Sweden are countries that are heavily influenced by the USA/UK scene.
So they are familiar with English but not other foreign languages.
That's why I am a pioneer and promote also the non-English rock & roll. To me that Slovenian sounds terrific !, great ! So I was glad that you didn't record in English (as so many bands from around the world do). But you see not everyone thinks about it like me.
However keep on goin' the good things, because (and I wrote Frans after reading his article some weeks ago and insisted that his story is correct) you have a GOOD (even EXCELLENT) high quality sound, as I also told you when I got your CD "pride dan" some time ago. This is honest and meant by heart !!!!!!!
You have to know that we are surprised to hear that from Slovenia....Slovenia is not a kind of rockabilly-centre (to us) you know......... :-)
